This study investigated the influences of childhood abuse experiences, perceived parenting behavior, and self-control on psychopathic traits of male adolescent inmates in youth detention centers. 212 adolescent inmates in the three nation-wide
detention centers filled out the structured questionnaire. Data were statistically analyzed providing descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients. Structured equation model examining whether self-control has mediating effect on paths of hildhood violence experiences and perceived parenting behavior on adolescents¡¯ psychopathic traits was employed.
Research results showed that the childhood abuse from parents and perceived parenting behavior had significant influences on the psychopathic traits of male juvenile offenders. Second, when self-control brought to the model as a mediator, the direct effect of parenting behavior became obsolete, it only indirectly affected the psychopathic traits via self-control, suggesting that self-control mediates the influence of perceived parenting behavior on psychopathic traits. Self-control did not mediate the effect of childhood abuse experience on the psychopathic traits of adolescent offenders; childhood abuse experience was the strongest predictor of psychopathic traits of juvenile offenders. The results call for the vigorous child abuse prevention efforts and intervention programs which strengthen adolescents¡¯ self control to alleviate the psychopathic traits among youth offenders. Implications of the research results and suggestions for the future research were also discussed.
